about the designer:
we were so fortunate to be able to speak with the designer and founder of simplekids, melanie ireland.
melanie offered us amazing insight on the design process and more background on the brand.

Q: what has been your main inspiration throughout the entire process of creating the simplekids brand?
A: i think the main inspiration for creating simplekids was my love for prints, travel, and colour. although, in my own home my colours are very neutral. i started the collection 23 years ago when my children were babies and i didn’t want the classic kids clothes, i wanted to make cool things that i would wear myself.
Q: are there any connections to belgium fashion or culture that are tied into the designs of simplekids clothing?
A: i moved to antwerp, belguim when i was 21. belguim is an extremely fashionable country and very stylish. so, i saw many beautiful things around me which i’m sure had a huge influence on my designs and taste!
Q: i understand simplekids carries up to age 18 years. has there been/is there any difficulty in creating designs that older kids will love? do you find it more fun to create designers for the younger kids, or older kids?
A: not all of our pieces go to 18 years, some of our styles are made for older kids which is easy. plus, my children are now in their 20s!
i do like making the smaller sizes though because you can play more with colour. it’s also much cuter to design little dresses, for example.
Q: what separates simplekids from other children's brands and why is being an ethical children's line so important to you?
A: it's very important for me to see the people who make the collection. i’m very lucky to work with the same people for the last 12 years. they think the same as me, so we’re always searching for the right fabrics and qualities. on a daily basis i’m in contact with my suppliers to check all stages during the creation and production of simplekids. over the years these people have become close friends of mine.
